This blog is the online home of me, Tom Jowitt, an Essex-based web application developer currently working for AEA Technology. This blog is a stream of web development consciousness (aka. a place for me to dump ideas and hopefully help folk out and get some feedback along the way).
Personal
I live in the Domesday fishing village of Leigh-on-Sea with my finance Rachel. When not coding I love record collecting, following Huddersfield Town FC, taking photos and spending time arguing the points of the day in the pub with my friends.
Professional
I graduated in 2001 with an MSci in Geoscience. It was during my time at university that I began messing about with computers and during my 3rd year I switched some of my Geology modules for Computer Science ones. It was a case of getting thrown in the deep end. After 6 months of using Windows 95 I was hit with UNIX and C++. Graduation came and went and I ended up writing VB, C++ and Oracle applications in the oil industry. It was during this first job that I discovered web programming, first ASP and then PHP. The power of dynamic web languages made an instant impression.
After a few years plying my trade in web industry as a LAMP developer (small, corporate and charity websites) I found my way back to geoscience working for an environmental government contractor creating web applications. Currently I’m learning GIS systems, KML and preparing for the inevitable upgrade to PHP 5.3.
